Welcome to Theories of Happiness

31 Jan

Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself:

I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today.

I can choose which it shall be.

Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet.

I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.

– Groucho Marx

Nancy Etcoff a cognitive research and instructor of “The Science of Happiness” at Harvard Medical School tells us that the pursuit of happiness is obligatory. We are driven to search for happiness just as much as we are driven to eat and to have sex. What is funny however, is that the scientific community only recently started to look into the question: “What is it that makes us happy?”

Theories of Happiness

So that is one of the reasons why I created this website. I want to show what scientists can tell us about happiness. How much can we influence our own happiness? What is the best way to influence it? And what are the things, people and situations we attribute happiness to although that in fact might not be the case? These are questions I want to look into and I want to provide you with different but clear information and theories answering these questions.

The Worlds Box of Happiness

The other reason why I created this website is because of the existence of a small box. It is called: “the worlds box of happiness”. This box contains 52 cards, one for every week of the year. Every card contains 2 tasks: an easier and a more difficult task. According to the author and designer Leo Bormans, these tasks are supposed to bring you closer to happiness. I want to do this as a little experiment and take one card out of the box every week and write down my experience for you. So that in the end we maybe can come to the conclusion if this box really brings me closer to happiness. On this blog you can read about my tasks, my experience and my ideas surrounding this “box of happiness”.

With special thanks to Leo Bormans for encouraging me to blog about his box of happiness.

Happiness for you

So now that you know all about this website, please look around and tell me what you think about it. Which theories do you like best? Do you agree with them or do you know about another theory that I haven’t mentioned? And how about the tasks? Have you ever done something like this yourself? Do you think I dealt with them in the right way? Let me know and leave a comment or e-mail me.

May you be happy today,

Anne-Sophie
